Co-Bill: Tattletale Saints & 10 String Symphony

Returning to Chestnut House Concerts on Friday, October 23, 2015 are the 10 String Symphony and Tattletale Saints.

The Nashville-based duo that is 10 String Symphony formed in 2012, when Rachel Baiman and Christian Sedelmyer formed the band out of mutual admiration for each other’s playing. They have two albums, 10 String Symphony and, to be released on October 23, 2015, Weight of the World.

Tattletale Saints is a duo from New Zealand that is now based in Nashville, Tennessee. Cy Winstanley, vocalist, guitarist and songwriter, is joined by vocalist and double bassist Vanessa McGowan. Tattletale Saints recorded their debut album How Red Is the Blood in January 2013 in Nashville with Grammy winning producer and multi instrumentalist Tim O’Brien.

Our house concerts begin with a potluck at 6 pm and the music starts at 7 pm.  A suggested donation of 15/20 per person can be made at the door. If you’d like to attend, email Tim at tlehman9@gmail.com with your name and the number of seats to reserve.

The Stray Birds’ new release “Best Medicine” is a 12 song CD recorded at Stonebridge Studios in Leesburg, VA and produced by the band and Stuart Martin. 10 of the tunes are originals with the same intelligent lyrics and tight harmonies that we learned to love from their first album, The Stray Birds.  The two traditional tunes included are ‘Who’s Gonna Shoe’ and ‘Pallet’; the latter being my favorite because I love the spirit that Charlie brings to the lead vocals.

If you’re looking for a 2015 wall calendar, you might want to consider Banjo Babes.  It features two artists that were at Chestnut House Concerts this fall, Lindsay Lou and Evie Ladin.

We’ll have to wait for 2016 and hope the other banjo babes that have been at Chestnut House Concerts like Laney Jones, Allison Russell (Birds of Chicago), Laurel Premo (Red Tail Ring),  Rachel Baiman (10 String Symphony) and Greta Bondesson (Baskery) will be featured in the next calendar.

The proceeds from the calendar are used to promote banjo music.

You know a band has got talent when they are booked to open for two of the greatest musicians in the history of bluegrass – Del McCoury and David Grisman.  Five shows in November starting tomorrow (11/11/14) at City Winery in New York, NY.

The Barefoot Movement

Congratulations to The Barefoot Movement for winning the “Band of the Year Momentum Award” from the International Bluegrass Music Association in October, 2014.  This band will make a return appearance at Chestnut House Concerts on Sunday, December 7, 2014.  Show at 7:00.

10 String Symphony – Rachel Baiman & Christian Sedelmyer

January 21, 2014 proved to be one of those snowy winter days when no one could get around on the roads except for the US postal workers, and in the early afternoon the dog and I met the mailman on one of our walks.  He delivered to me Speakeasy Man, Rachel Baiman’s newly released CD and the next hour was spent absorbing the new music and some hot cocoa in front of the fireplace.

This CD was one of several Kickstarter projects that Tim and I have backed, and as has been our experience with the others, we were extremely pleased with the sound of the final product. Half of the recording took place in Scotland and half in Nashville. Rachel brought together some amazing talent for the foundation of this album including Dave Goldenberg (mandolin), Andrew Small (upright bass), Matheu Watson (guitar, mandola, vocals), Dan Watkins ( guitar), Signy Jakobsdottir (percussion) and Christian Sedelmyer (fiddle).

The songs are a mixture of originals and covers; my favorite cover being the best version of Blind Lemon Jefferson’s See That My Grave is Kept Clean that I have heard. A few guest appearances on individual songs include the great Nathaniel Smith on cello (Natalie MacMaster, Jeremy Kittel, and Sarah Jarosz), Shelby Means on bass and backing vocals (Della Mae), Phil Cunningham on accordion and Brittany Haas on fiddle.

DSC5278-even-smallerRachel will be at Chestnut House Concerts on Friday, April 4, 2014 along with Christian Sedelmyer performing as 10 String Symphony. 10 String Symphony released their first album in November 2012, their instrumentation has expanded from 2 5-string fiddles to include the occasional clawhammer banjo and resonator mandolin, though still maintaining a stripped down, tightly woven and carefully arranged duo sound. They are on tour with Tattletale Saints from New Zealand and each band will take a set and also play a few songs as a 4 piece.

Tattletale Saints

In August I communicated with Rachel Baiman of 10 String Symphony about the possibility of having them perform at Chestnut House Concerts. Her response was “I wonder if you might consider doing a co-bill? Our tour this spring in the US will be co-bill with our friends and amazing New Zealand musicians Tattletale Saints.  They just recorded an album in Nashville produced by Tim O’Brien and will be releasing it in the US in March.  I can’t say enough good things about their music, they are also a duo but play guitar and upright bass so it makes for a nice, complementary co-bill.” 

Consider it?  What an honor!

The 48th Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards were held January 26, 2014 and Tattletale Saints took home the Tui for the Best Folk Album 2014. The album, ‘How Red Is the Blood’ was recorded at Butcher Shoppe Recording Studios in Nashville, TN with renowned engineer David Ferguson and was produced by Grammy award winner Tim O’Brien. The Tattletale Saints duo is described as a “masterful blend of Americana fused with jazz, soul and pop” and is made up of Cy Winstanley voice/guitar/harmonica and Vanessa McGowan voice/double bass.

This coming Friday (March 28th) we have a house show with Mando Planet.

One week later on Friday, April 4th, we have our first House Concert Co-Bill with 10 String Symphony and Tattletale Saints. Each band will perform separately but will also do some songs together.

Kickstarter: Another way to support musicians

Kickstarter is a way to fund creative projects.  It’s an all or nothing campaign.  An artist (musician, filmmaker, designer) sets a goal with a specific deadline and encourages people to pledge.  The artist offers incentives to those who pledge; a most common incentive for funding a musician is a digital download of their new CD.  If the artist does not reach their goal by the deadline, the project is not funded and the pledger is not charged for any of the amount pledged.

Chestnut House Concerts is excited to host 10 String Symphony and Tattletale Saints in April 2014.  10 String Symphony is a Nashville based duo that includes Christian Sedelmyer and Rachel Baiman, both playing the 5-string fiddle.  As the is the norm for most musicians, both Christian and Rachel are involved in individual projects as well and Rachel is nearing the end of her Kickstarter Campaign for her first solo record.

Rachel is making a record of traditional and original fiddle tunes and songs, recorded half in Dunkeld, Scotland, and half in Nashville, TN.  The goal is to mix up material and musicians stylistically, and create a cohesive album incorporating new sounds in traditional music from both places; Old-Time recorded in Scotland with Scottish musicians, Scottish tunes paired with original tunes, recorded in Nashville.  An old time song written by Gillian Welch, with Phil Cunningham on accordion…the possibilities are endless and so beautiful.
