BN-IX108_NYKULT_M_20150612162014Tim Connell who played at Chestnut House Concerts in 2014 and 2015 with Mando Planet also plays mandolin with the world renowned Ger Mandolin Orchestra. They recently performed in New York City, an event that was picked up by the Wall Street Journal. 

 

Our very first house concert guest back in 2012 (and again with Sally Barris in 2015) was Jonathan Byrd. In my opinion he is one of the best writers in Americana music, and Jonathan Byrd’s response to the tragedy in South Carolina was shared over 4,000 times on Facebook.

Alex Conerly of The Barefoot Movement proposed to his love, female vocalist Marion Grace, at the Grand Ole Opry.  We’re happy to celebrate their engagement.

 

 

After doing a project together for Earthwork Music, Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys recorded “Burning it Down” with Max Lockwood and John Driscoll at La Luna Recording and Sound. They sound mighty fine together, but it might be difficult to squeeze a 6 piece band on our ‘stage’ at Chestnut House Concerts.

The July 13, 2015 concert with I Draw Slow is sold out. You can see them on July 14, 2015 at Tellus360. On July 28, 2015 we will be hosting Roochie Toochie and the Ragtime Shepherd Kings. Diplomas and the Double Bass

Upright bass player Kirsten Lamb of Cold Chocolat97460012 (2)e, a Boston based four-piece band that played at Chestnut House Concerts last summer, graduated from the New England Conservatory with a Master’s in Contemporary Improvisation.  Congratulations Kirsten!

Another female bass player – Hasee Ciaccio with The Barefoot Movement graduated with her bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University.  We know how hard she worked to make this happen – way to go Hasee!

Tania Elizabeth and her husband10405674_10153098878905867_4331546039580514956_n Andy Stack (playing together as The Stacks) were at Chestnut House Concerts in June 2013.  Tania has been playing with The Avett Brothers and Andy’s band Buffalo Stack has been gaining popularity after great reviews of their album “Buffalo Stack”. The band is working on their second recording. Andy was featured in the May 2015 issue of Vintage Guitar.

No Depression, the leading voice in American roots music since 1995, premiered a video by Mandy Fer and Dave McGraw called “Tide Moon Ship Horn”. We’re hoping to have Dave and Mandy return to Chestnut House Concerts before the end of 2015. They were received well in 2013 and their most recent album Maritime is getting great reviews.

The Stray Birds the_stray_birds_-_best_medicine_sm_2

The Stray Birds’ new release “Best Medicine” is a 12 song CD recorded at Stonebridge Studios in Leesburg, VA and produced by the band and Stuart Martin. 10 of the tunes are originals with the same intelligent lyrics and tight harmonies that we learned to love from their first album, The Stray Birds.  The two traditional tunes included are ‘Who’s Gonna Shoe’ and ‘Pallet’; the latter being my favorite because I love the spirit that Charlie brings to the lead vocals.

If you’re looking for a 2015 wall calendar, you might want to consider Banjo Babes.  It features two artists that were at Chestnut House Concerts this fall, Lindsay Lou and Evie Ladin.

We’ll have to wait for 2016 and hope the other banjo babes that have been at Chestnut House Concerts like Laney Jones, Allison Russell (Birds of Chicago), Laurel Premo (Red Tail Ring),  Rachel Baiman (10 String Symphony) and Greta Bondesson (Baskery) will be featured in the next calendar.

The proceeds from the calendar are used to promote banjo music.

You know a band has got talent when they are booked to open for two of the greatest musicians in the history of bluegrass – Del McCoury and David Grisman.  Five shows in November starting tomorrow (11/11/14) at City Winery in New York, NY.

The Barefoot Movement

Congratulations to The Barefoot Movement for winning the “Band of the Year Momentum Award” from the International Bluegrass Music Association in October, 2014.  This band will make a return appearance at Chestnut House Concerts on Sunday, December 7, 2014.  Show at 7:00.

Tattletale Saints

Cy Winstanley and Vanessa McGowan (Tattletale Saints) were guests on NPR’s Mountain Stage on June 20, 2014.  You can hear the entire performance below.

Birds of Chicago 10425493_1506172676282630_3635648870989989909_nIda Mauve celebrates a 6 month birthday.  The Birds of Chicago are as busy as ever touring from coast to coast in North America this summer and fall.

The Barefoot Movement

This 4-piece bluegrass band was asked to visit the United States Embassy in Burkina Faso, Africa as part of cultural exchange effort.  The trip took place the first week of July 2014.  10492557_10152329743134132_6498086861373983910_n

Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys  

The New Roots Exchange, Vol.1 was released in April 2014.

STORE_1394750593Side A contains 2 traditional tunes played by a Red Tail Ring (appearing at Chestnut House Concerts in October 2014) and Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys . On side B each group plays alone covering a song written by the other group.  Red Tail Ring covers My Side of the Mountain and Lindsay Lou covers Body Like a Bell. 

The Earthwork Music 2014 Summer Sampler is free and contains over 20 songs including The Wind & Rain from Side A of New Roots Exchange.  It also includes another song by Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys as well as a track by Flatbelly dobro player Mark Lavengood.  You can order your copy by clicking the link below.

Things I Learned at the 2014 Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival

Having just returned from the 2014 Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival I would like to share some thoughts.

1. The Deadly Gentlemen continue to be deadly gentlemen and have a new bass player with an amazing voice.

2. If you can’t put down your phone while you’re in a PORT-A-POTTY …you might need therapy. I mean really, who wants to be in there one second longer than necessary?

3. The Barefoot Movement were ON FIRE! This 4 piece band played here at Chestnut House Concerts on Memorial Day 2013 and they’ve developed marvelously as writers, performers and have become a cohesive band. They played three times on three different stages during the festival including the main stage on Thursday afternoon. Of course Tim and I had tears in our eyes as the crowd of thousands gave a standing ovation.

4. James McIver (banjo player for Cold Chocolate) is on tour with the band while completing his dissertation for his PhD in Physics from MIT – meanwhile, after studying the schedule extensively, Tim and I couldn’t remember which stage we were headed to next for more than 5 minutes – let alone which band was playing there.

5. Awesome bands come out of Boston’s Berklee College of Music. We first saw Laney Jones & the Lively Spirits a year ago at Grey Fox and this year we were wowed by Twisted Pine.

6. The woman seated behind the sound booth who kept telling the sound engineers to sit down so she could see …just doesn’t have a clue.

7. Not to my surprise – the audience members either loved or hated Gangastagrass. I won’t say my preference…but Tim did find it curious that we accidentally ended up “Astrograss for Kids – The Colored Pencil Factory” CD instead of the “Broken Hearts and Stolen Money” Gangastagrass CD he wanted.

8. Cold Chocolate played at the Creekside Stage on Saturday. Before the band started the guy to the left of me told the woman he was with “Cold Chocolate is up next and I was told I’ve got to see them”. The woman on my right told her friend “I don’t want to leave until we’ve seen Cold Chocolate – I’ve heard great things about them”. They both were right, this band is a lot of fun. Ethan and Kirsten switch on taking the lead, they do mostly originals with a few covers in the mix.

I hope you can join us on Tuesday (July 22). It’s not bluegrass – Cold Chocolate is in what I call the progressive folk/string band genre. Ethan Robbins – guitar, vocals; Kirsten Lamb – upright bass, vocals; James McIver – banjo, vocals and Ariel Bernstein – drums. Potluck at 6, Show at 7. All donations go to the band.

I’ll even rustle up some cold dessert. I don’t know, perhaps chocolate?

Laney Jones and the Lively Spirits were selected as the winners of the bluegrass genre of BELK’s Southern Musician Showcase in March 2014 and later that month performed at The Fillmore Charlotte.  You can read more in the Charlotte Business Journal.

 

The 2014 Spring issue of Mandolin Magazine features mandolin player Tim Connell.  Tim was at Chestnut ImageHouse Concerts in March 2014 with Jack Dwyer (Mando Planet).  The same issue of Mandolin Magazine gave a rave review of Tim’s new CD with musician Mike Burdette (Rio Con Brio) called Stumptown Swing.  We’ll keep our ear to the ground for any news of another East coast tour.

 

Telisha Williams mentioned her training for an upcoming marathon when she played at Chestnut House Concerts in January 2014 with her band, The Wild Ponies.  On April 26, 2014 Telisha completed two goals… she finished her marathon and raised money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Some of you will remember our 2013 Memorial Day house concert with The Barefoot Movement. Here is the band featured on The Bluegrass Situation with “It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas”.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and will see many of you on December 27th for The Tanasi Ramblers: Cruz Contreras, Shelby Means and Josh Oliver.

Social media makes it easy to follow the artists that have performed at Chestnut House Concerts and there are some great things happening to these fine musicians.

Several of the performers from last year’s line up attended the annual convention of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) this past week in Raleigh, NC including The Barefoot Movement, The Stray Birds, and  Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys.  The Raleigh News & Observer featured The Barefoot Movement in their entertainment section on the write up of the IBMA event.

The Kruger Brothers’ show on April 7, 2013 was a favorite of our regular Chestnut House Concert audience members.  It was no surprise to anyone that Jens won the 2013 Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass.  What fun to see them on the David Letterman show Friday night (September 27, 2013).
